This was actually my first ever digital painting. I use Photoshop and Corel Painter pretty exclusively, along with a Wacom pressure sensitive drawing tablet. After I have the final drawing completed, I scan it into Photoshop to do preliminary work and blocking in of values. I then load it into Painter to do most of the actual "painting." Any other final adjustments are made in Photoshop for the final illustration. If anyone reading this is interested in learning more about the digital painting process, I recommend a magazine called Imagine FX, which is completely dedicated to this kind of work.
